Athelhampton
Athelhampton House and Gardens, near Dorchester, combine grandeur and charm. The poet and novelist Thomas Hardy had a life-long relationship with Athelhapton, his first visit was as a young apprentice stonemason, when he painted a watercolour of the gatehouse. The house was the inspiration for Bathsheba’s farm in Far From the Madding Crowd and the setting for the The Dame of Athelhall, a poem about unrequited love.

Dalemain
Dalemain, in Cumbria, may host the Marmalade Awards, but the real treats are in the gardens. These are a living historical record of different gardening styles. The formality of the Elizabethan knot garden vies with the romance of an English cottage garden, all set against the backdrop of Lakeland fells. It is a garden of contrasts – between structure and nature, detail and grandeur.
